Tips for brightening up a dull student room

Thinking about ideas for decorating your room at university? Student accommodation can often be a box room with a small window that barely opens, a built-in ancient wood furniture and almost always painted in an uninspiring shade of dull! So, here are some easy and quick ways to liven the place up a bit:

  1. Fairy lights are invaluable

Fairy lights are a saviour for a dull room. Hang them across the walls and the corners of the room for a chilled out, lit up vibe that adds much comfort to your space.

  1. Get a noticeboard

A noticeboard can be used for all sorts of stuff. Funny pics of you and your mates, cute cat photos, inspirational quotes and of course, the really useful stuff such as reminders, dates, deadlines and your reading list. You can also use it to add colour and decoration to your space.

  1. Have fun with furniture

While there’s not much you can do about boring built-in student furniture, you can always add a few of your own favourites. What could be better than catching up with your reading while relaxing in an iconic and brightly coloured Egg Chair? Find a replica Egg Chair at a site like Pash Classics.

  1. Bring in some nature

House plants will always literally, bring life to even the drabbest room. Choosing some really beautiful, unique pots as well and arranging them in groups around your space will make things feel much cosier.

  1. Cover ugly walls

Posters, rugs, canopies and all manner of boho style wall hangings are available to cover up dubious wallpaper or unsightly paint choices. Creating a sort of canopy effect will soften the whole room. Try hanging wallhangings from the ceiling and then to the wall. It sounds strange, but can look really effective.

  1. Photo Wall

If hanging all your fave photos onto the wall to create a gallery just sounds like too much of a faff, then consider the clever use pegs to complete the same look. String up a few lights and use pegs to hang photos, postcards or motivational quotes from them.

  1. A plush rug

This might sound a little fancy for a student room but when people see how it transforms a room and feel the softness under their feet, they will want one too. This is also a good idea if the existing carpet or flooring leaves a lot to be desired so that you basically want to cover as much of it as you can.

  1. Liven up your bedding

Bedding is one of the cheapest and easiest way to give a room some personality. Choose one with a pattern that fits your style and go to town on the pillows as well. A good throw can’t go wrong, with the same applying to cushions too. These can be picked up for good value at supermarkets these days.
