Psychological factors that lead to accidents

Distracted driving is a leading cause of automobile accidents. It is a dangerous activity that puts the lives of thousands of people at risk. Yet, even though this activity is under-reported, little research has looked at the behavioral characteristics of distracted drivers.

This study aims to understand and predict drivers’ distractive behavior. To do this, the article tests the following five variables: gender, age, attitudes, motivational pre-cursors, and the simplest of them all – implementation intentions.

Gender and age are significantly associated with distracted driving. For example, teens and young adults are more likely to engage in risky driving behaviors. In addition, male teenagers are more likely to be involved in rear-end crashes.

Interestingly, while these factors are related to behavior, they do not predict it. However, it is essential to note that this does not mean they do not affect the risk of distracted driving.
